Chris Ewen Bio
Chris Ewen has been at the forefront of the Boston area’s
electro/industrial/goth scene for almost two decades, and has been
a resident dj at ManRay since the late 80’s. He’s originally
from Detroit, where he spun records at several underground clubs
and was a member of the groundbreaking (if now somewhat obscure)
electronic rock band Figures On A Beach, with whom he released several
records which are now all hopelessly out of print. He moved to Boston
in late 1985, where he began spinning at ManRay and legendary goth/industrial/punk
club Ground Zero. When Ground Zero closed in late 1989, Chris packed
up all of his records and moved over to ManRay full-time. He’s
presided over the Boston area’s longest running weekly goth/industrial
night (“Crypt” on Wednesdays), and created the area’s
first (and most often copied) retro night on Saturdays, originally
called “Chris’ New Wave Party, now known as “Heroes”.
He has spun at all of ManRay’s B&D Balls, continues to
dj at every weekly Friday fetish/industrial event, and can also
be heard every Thursday at “Campus”, spinning an eclectic
mix of new underground rock, electro, new wave & rap he terms
“alternative boypop”.
Chris currently records music under the name Future Bible Heroes,
with Stephin Merritt & Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields.
Future Bible Heroes have released 2 albums: “Memories Of Love”
& “Eternal Youth”, and 3 EPs: “Lonely Days”,
“I’m Lonely (And I Love It)” & “The
Lonely Robot” which contains remixes from “Eternal Youth”
by Daniel Miller, Soft Cell & Client, among others.
Chris appeared on The Magnetic Fields’ 3 cd opus “69
Love Songs”, does sound design for websites & video games,
has recently contributed the title music for Neil Gaiman’s
new DVD “A Short Film about John Bolton”, composed soundtracks
for the short films of 99th Mind, and remixed tracks for The Crüxshadows,
My Favourite and Freezepop. He is currently writing & recording
his new studio project The Hidden Variable, a collaboration with
acclaimed dark fiction authors acting as lyricists, including Peter
Straub, Neil Gaiman, Lemony Snicket. Caitlin R. Kiernan, China Méiville,
Poppy Z. Brite, Charles de Lint, Gregory Maguire, Martha Soukup,
and others.
He currently resides in Cambridge with his two chihuahuas Edison
and Tesla.
